Orlando, June 10, 2011
Please join us June 10, 2011, at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld for a gathering of the Society of Alumni and Friends. The social hour will coincide with the annual conference for Investigative Reporters and Editors, and is a chance to gather any ISU graduates who live in Central Florida, as well as those who will be attending the IRE conference. We will sign up new members for the Society, and discuss ways we can help recent Iowa State graduates and other alumni. We will send out invitations to this event in May; anybody who knows they’ll be attending IRE is free to to contact us to join the fun. Drinks and appetizers provided.

Location: Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld, 6677 Sea Harbor Drive, Orlando, Florida (suite to be announced).
Time: 6-8 p.m.

Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 1, 2010, at Kansas City Star
On Oct. 1, 2010, about 25 alumni and friends gathered in downtown Kansas City at the new production facility of the Kansas City Star. Several former and current Star reporters and editors were on hand, as well as grads from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s, and alumni involved in broadcast, marketing, public relations and other fields. The special guest was former KC Star and ISU professor Giles Fowler, who spoke about his recently published book, Deaths on Pleasant Street, which is about a 1909 Kansas City murder case. The event was organized by Society co-chair Chris Adams ’88.

Denver, Colo., Aug. 5, 2010, at Rock Bottom Restaurant
On Aug. 5, 2010, alumni, friends, Greenlee Director Michael Bugeja, and ISU faculty gathered in downtown Denver for a reception hosted by Greenlee namesakes Bob and Diane Greenlee. Faculty members were in town for a journalism conference, and Society members were invited to join the festivities.

Minneapolis, Minn., Aug. 4, 2010, at Loon Cafe
On Aug. 4, 2010, about 25 alumni and friends gathered at The Loon Cafe in downtown Minneapolis to kick off activities for the Society of Alumni and Friends in the Twin Cities. Our special guest was Barbara Mack, an ISU journalism faculty member who helped inspire and form the Society. We were joined by alumni from several eras — 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s — and well as a few current students or recent grads. Among the attendees were those representing the newspaper, magazine, broadcast, public relations, and advertising fields, as well as journalism graduates who had transitioned from communications into law, music editing, and other fields. Tom Wilson ’78, president of Risdall Marketing Group, helped organize the event with Society co-chairs Caralee Adams ’86 and Chris Adams ’88.

Washington, D.C., event at McClatchy Washington Bureau
On July 20, 2006, than 40 alumni and friends gathered at the McClatchy Washington Bureau. Special guests included Greenlee Director Michael Bugeja and College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean Michael Whiteford.

Des Moines, Iowa, event at Meredith Corp.
The Meredith Corp. hosted more than 70 alumni and friends on April 13, 2006 for the first official gathering of the Society of Alumni and Friends. Several current and former journalism faculty members attended the event, as well as current ISU students and several ISU graduates who work for Meredith.
