John Arends ’77: Bringing the story of Jack Trice to life

John Arends first wrote about Iowa State football player Jack Trice in the 1980s. Now, nearly 90 years after Trice’s death, the screenplay he initially wrote in the 1980s will be performed at a Chicago-area theater. Arends’ ultimate dream is for the story to be transformed into a movie.

On Aug. 5, 2010, alumni, friends, Greenlee Director Michael Bugeja, and ISU faculty gathered in downtown Denver for a reception hosted by Greenlee namesakes Bob and Diane Greenlee. Faculty members were in town for a journalism conference, and Society members were invited to join the festivities.

On Aug. 4, 2010, about 25 alumni and friends gathered at The Loon Cafe in downtown Minneapolis for a gathering of the Society of Alumni and Friends. We were joined by Barbara Mack, an ISU journalism faculty member who helped form the Society. Also there were alumni from several eras — 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s — as well as a few current students or recent grads.

Scott Stanzel ’95: From White House to the West Coast

Scott Stanzel spent most of his career in politics, after graduating from Iowa State in 1995. Now, the former deputy press secretary for President George W. Bush has set out on his own, forming a Seattle public relations agency. The transition has been challenging — and rewarding.
